LED Walls
Guide
The Latest Technology for Presentations & Event Design
Projectors and fast fold screens were the leading industry standard in video for decades.
We are starting to see a shift where the technology for LED walls isn’t as new and is becoming more affordable, which in turn leads it to being used more across the globe during events.
We will see in 2024 an explosion of LED walls becoming more and more the standard and the trend will only continue to grow.
What is the difference between an LED wall and a projector?
Fast fold screens and projectors were all the rage for decades. Portable, quick to assemble, and available in a variety of sizes, they allowed events to include production in any venue and, with power management, in any location. Fast fold screens, like the name suggests, fold and are easily stored for transportation. While they are still used today, they do have limitations over the growing popularity of LED walls.
The screen is often a focal point of your event, especially if the screen is a backdrop for the stage. This means you want high quality displays as part of your overall event design.
The quality of the display is beyond comparison. This is due to the fact that the light is directly emitted from the LED wall itself, as opposed to being thrown onto a surface like a projector and screen, this is how LED walls provide unparalleled video quality. And the margins in affordability are closing fast, with LED video walls fast becoming more affordable to fit into an event budget. Unlike projectors, LED walls have no requirement to place a projector a certain distance from the screen – the video feeds directly from a laptop into the processor at the control board, giving you the ability to “hide” the inner workings behind the scenes. All your attendees will see is a clean, seamless presentation.
How does an LED video wall differ from a green screen?
Green screens are a special colored screen that allows a producer to add effects behind the presenter after the fact. This is popular for pre-recordings that will be edited before a presentation or for photo booths (on a smaller scale) to add complex effects in post production. They are not used for a live presentation because the audience will only see the green screen, and none of the effects. This limitation is also why presenters and production companies are moving away from green screens altogether. It takes a great deal of imagination from the presenter to know what will be displayed behind them on green screens, because they cannot see it while presenting. LED video walls are now being used for virtual productions in place of green screens. Many studios are embracing the change because the presenters can now interact with the displays, reducing the post production needed to create a polished presentation.
It also allows for mixed media to be incorporated into a presentation. For example, slideshows, graphics, videos, and text can simultaneously be mixed together and displayed throughout the presentation on cue. They also make for an impressive backdrop for stages, entrances, and backgrounds in lue of or in combination with dressings.
Using Virtual Production for Presentations LED Video Walls for Virtual Production
Immersive, customizable, and easily changed to any variation of size – LED video walls can be scaled to fit any space and present any displays needed to create an effect. Adding audio improves the user’s experience as well. Take a look at this LED video tunnel (see below) created for an entrance to a Gala in San Francisco. It really changed the experience for the attendees in immersing them into the world of water, the theme of the evening.
This same technology can be scaled to fit arches, like this LED arch that played clips of hyper realistic depictions of nature.
Or curved to hug a rounded stage, like this LED wall from XOS’s product launch in Los Angeles.
They can even be placed on tracks to move, like this moving LED wall use at Weber Metals’s unveiling in Los Angeles!
This makes them extremely adaptable to any space or desired effect! From event design to presentations, they add value to all types of corporate events.
How Virtual Production can be used for Presentations
Thanks to LED walls, presentations are being transformed. Adding in ultra realistic video displays to the background of a speaker enhances the experience for the audience. A quality event production company can combine this technology with audio and additional visual effects (such as lighting) to make a presentation move an audience to its whims- epic, solemn, uplifting, exciting…Captivating an audience in events such as conferences, activation events, company holiday parties, or even experiential marketing events is the goal that drives a desirable action. Imagine an epic mood at a product launch building over the presentation until that curtain drops revealing your new product! This is one of our favorite product launch event ideas for good reason. You’ll seriously impress buyers and drive better event ROI vs a standard stage presentation.
As an added bonus producers can cue to live-filming of speakers between mixed media and video clips to really enhance the speaker’s visibility and performance.
Imagine placing your product behind the LED video wall and unlocking the virtual vault – the video takes the audience on a journey through your story before the display returns to an ultra realistic “vault doors” which unlock and as they part virtually, the walls move apart to unveil a world record-breaking product! Your product launch or experiential event will certainly get the press’ attention!
