About To Help Everyone
T.H.E. (To Help Everyone) Health and Wellness Centers has been a Los Angeles beacon of hope and health for five decades. This remarkable non-profit recently celebrated a golden anniversary, 50 years of unwavering commitment to serving the community’s most vulnerable, something we were proud to be a small part of.
T.H.E. prioritizes providing excellent and affordable medical care, from preventive measures to primary care and behavioral health services, for those who need it most. Their dedication to the wellbeing of their patients transcends financial barriers, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy life.
They help over 13,000 patients each year, treating the whole person. Their work has made Los Angeles a better place for thousands, and even more, stand to benefit from their expanding services. One patient said, “I feel at home here” after 37 years of care. However, their care goes beyond just their patients; they touch the families of the patients, improving lives over generations of service.
Honor & History
Starting with humble beginnings of just one clinic in South Los Angeles that provided care for women of South Los Angeles, they have since expanded to embrace ALL those who come to their doors.
Their expanding practice now includes six clinics: Western Health Center, La Brea Health Center, Lennox Health Center, Hawthorne Health Center, Wellness Center at Crenshaw High School, and a student-only clinic at Dorsey High School. They provide healthcare services and also offer education classes on everything from women’s health to diet, further empowering the community they serve.
We had the honor and privilege to partner with them to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a luncheon hosted for those who helped make their vision a reality. Held at Hotel Indigo in DTLA, the room was decorated with branded blues and greens while gold touches were added to nod to their golden anniversary.
The space was transformed with wall drapings and a dramatic red carpet/draped entryway. The tables were graced with rich linens and beautiful floral centerpieces in tall acrylic vases. A 4x4x6 foot stage lined with black astroturf and skirting was topped with an elegant acrylic podium. Just outside the banquet hall, the courtyard was set up with cocktail tables and lounge furniture.
Lunch for Legacies
A branded step-n-repeat and photographer captured the guests as they entered the luncheon. A musical trio created the ambiance with light tunes. Simple but elegant, the luncheon focused on saying “thank you” to those who made 50 years of outstanding accomplishments possible.
Lunch included a first course of hearts of romaine tossed in Caesar dressing and topped with brioche croutons. For the main dish, pan-seared boneless skinless chicken breast brushed with Dijon mustard and baked to golden perfection was served with mashed potatoes, blistered haricot vert (also known as French green beans), and cherry tomatoes with a truffle demi glaze. Hand-passed hors d’oeuvres included charred beef tenderloin, brie and tomato, ‘Not So Old School Crab Cakes’ and rich coconut shrimp.
Speakers
Carolina Trejos from LATV acted as MC for the event, opening for president and C.E.O. Clifford Shiepe of T.H.E. He discussed his and the board’s decision to go against the norm of hosting a gala with fundraisers for milestone anniversaries. Instead, he said, they wanted to do something different and give back to the community they serve. In place of a gala, they hosted the legacy luncheon.
“All of us in this room have jobs providing services to the underserved,” he stated. “It’s a job that will never end.” He went on to say “Our clinics will have a purpose indefinitely.”
Ronald Braden, T.H.E. Board Chair, said they honor the city of Los Angeles and the mayor of L.A. for continuing to support the centers and the community.
Privilege & Joy
U.S. Representative Maxine Waters also took the podium to congratulate them on 50 years and stress the importance of voting to ensure the continued support of federal programs that directly affect the underserved, including those in the communities that T.H.E. served. “I believe that everyone deserves the right to healthcare and housing,” she said.
Sylvia Drew Ivie, former T.H.E. Executive Director and now Senior Special Assistant to the President and CEO for External Affairs at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science, said “Community healthcare is a joy. It’s just a joy because you’re in partnership with people who love you, who feel at home with you”. She went on to close with “I think what makes it so special is that it was built on heart and caring for community. So I feel like it was a privilege. ”
Deputy mayor Jacqueline Hamilton discussed the importance of healthcare to herself, the L.A. mayor Karen Bass. “I’ve been up and down with all the joys and sorrows that you’ve had through this last ten years. And I am just absolutely delighted to celebrate 50 years with you, to bring you warm and heartfelt greetings on behalf of Karen Bass who really values what you’ve done. ”
Unwavering Dedication
A representative for U.S. Rep Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Joanna Rodriguez, also took to the mic to congratulate them. She highlighted the “compassion that they have, resiliency, unwavering dedication to the wellbeing of our community” that has made them a “beacon providing healthcare for those in need.” She closed with, “May the next 50 years be filled with even greater achievements”. We at Event Solutions could not agree more.
The luncheon closed with happy chatter, dessert, and coffee. The dessert menu includes mini chocolate strawberry cake-wich, lemon meringue, tiramisu, café mocha, and strawberry cheesecake. It was a sweet ending to a milestone of service with the promise of even better tomorrows ahead.
