Floral Design
The floral design at an event is an integral part of one’s planning and décor. Floral arrangements are used to add flair to the room and dress the tables as centerpieces. Usually, once an event planner begins to write a proposal for a client, they will include a piece about the floral design. The floral design is usually conceptualized by an event planner after they have internalized your vision. The event planner will then hire a florist to pick the freshest flowers available to create the floral arrangements. Floral design is based upon several things such as:
- Seasonality
- Time of Day
- The Environment of the Venue
- The tastes of the client
- The event theme
- Budget
- Planned décor of the event
Seasonality is very important when conceptualizing an idea for a floral arrangement. You need to know enough about flowers to realize which ones are available and which ones aren’t. Some flowers do not grow in the winter, and some tend to look better in the summer. Some flowers like daisies for instance scream spring and are inappropriate for a Thanksgiving sit down dinner. Even if the client isn’t aware of seasonality and picks a flower that isn’t available, it is up to the event planner or florist to suggest another alternative. The time of day in which your event is going to be held is important as well because some flowers have more of a daytime feel and might look odd at a night event.
A mix of darker and lighter colored flowers tends to look better at an evening event because they add an interesting contrast. The environment in which your event is held is actually the most important factor. You can have the most beautiful floral design in the world but if your flowers are susceptible to heat and you have heating lamps and candles everywhere… your money is down the drain. If you are having an outdoor cocktail party in the dead of a New York summer you need to make sure your flower choice can withstand heat and won’t wither immediately.
Make sure that your flower selection and floral design is in line with the budget. Obviously, some flowers cost a lot more than others, especially if you are using a lot of them and can seriously drive up your costs. The budget is a balancing game, so don’t overspend on your floral design. Also, it is important that your floral selection is in line with the tastes of your client, their theme and overall décor. The floral design at an event is an integral part of the overall décor and can really make or break an event’s design.
